TL;DR pros and cons list of traditional publishing vs self-publishing here from Writer’s Digest.
I forgot to mention it in the podcast (oops, chaos brain), but another thing to consider with self-publishing is that large Art Council grants often require one traditionally published book for an author to be seen as a “qualified professional” eligible for grants. If we ever win a legacy fund here at Eavesdrop, I hope we can make grants that encompass more than that. Tell your single, elderly estranged uncles about us!
Speaking of that, bonus grant resource: check out Little Dog Creative Consulting. Exciting things happening there soon for artist grant software!
